The historic Wayland Gym built in 1937, is the palace of “King” Kelly Coleman, Kentucky’s first Mr Basketball, 1956, of whom Adolf Rupp declared: Coleman is ” The greatest high school player who ever lived.” ESPN came to Wayland to interview Kelly Coleman. The film crew wanted to conduct the interview in a place that had some significance in Kelly’s life. Immediately Kelly suggested a place he still holds dear, the vintage Wayland Gym. ESPN granted Kelly’s request. Wayland hosted 3 District Championships in 1938,1944, and 1953.
